To qualify for this program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Citizenship/Residency
Be a protected person as defined by section 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) by the application deadline date, a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a resident of Canada.
- Enrollment
Be registered in, have applied for, or intend to apply for full-time admission to an approved graduate program at the master’s or doctorate level at a Canadian university with a CGS M allocation.

Academic Progress
- Have finished, as of December 31 of the application year, between 0 and 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are seeking funding. This program may be a master’s program, a direct-entry doctoral program (entering directly from a bachelor’s program without prior graduate enrollment), a combined master’s-doctoral program, or a master’s program transitioning to an eligible doctoral program.
- Or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in a master’s program that is acceptable, where degree requirements must be satisfied before the award can be activated. This permits activation throughout the first 12 months of a subsequent doctorate program for which you are applying for financing.
No Previous CGS M Scholarship
- Should not have previously held or currently hold a CGS M scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
Academic Excellence
- Have completed the last two completed academic years (full-time equivalent) with a first-class average, as judged by the host institution. It’s recommended to get clarity from potential host institutions by contacting them; certain universities may accept applications from people who have not earned a first-class average.
Application Limit
- You may only apply for one fellowship (master’s or doctorate) or scholarship every academic year, to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. It should be noted that the first chronologically submitted eligible application will be kept if several applications are submitted. Applications for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships and Vanier CGS program are exempt from this restriction (with some possible CIHR internship exceptions).
